Application Systems Architect

General Duties/Expectations:

Analyzes business and application requirements. 
Defines system requirements and develops system baseline architectures. 

Investigates in-house and 3rd-party solutions to answer complex system development problems.  The Application Systems Architect is a generalist: a technologist who knows much about a large variety of web-based and related computer technologies.  Contributes to the analysis of, and makes recommendations for, key technical decisions and choices about the technical implementation environment.  The Application Systems Architect may work on systems or sub-systems that span individual projects, however they may also work ‘on assignment’ for highly critical, complex projects during the project’s technical elaboration.  Completely proficient as a Senior Application Developer in times of such need.  An Application Systems Architect is a principal technical position: they  may be called on (and expected to assist)  in virtually any technical duty that is important to the organization. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.

Experience with mobile application architecture, frameworks and development methodologies with solid programming abilities in one or more of the following: Java/J2ME, Objective C/Cocoa framework, iPhone/iPad SDK or Android application development is a plus.

Experience Guidelines:
Bachelor of Computer Science, Information Technology or equivalent work experience; Advanced degree preferred.
10+ years of related professional experience
7+ years of recent Web Development experience

Senior UI/UX Developer

General Duties/Expectations:
Responsible for the UI/UX design of multiple LAMP-based web portals, web-based and mobile application development and integration with backend systems.

Extensive experience in web design standards, XHTML, CSS, electronic communications practices, video editing and encoding standards for the web, mobile-browser compliance, social media, streaming and podcasting including HTML 5, H.264 and Flash streaming.

  • Responsible for implementing original design concepts in Adobe Photoshop for all new site designs and redesigns
  • Expert level knowledge in JavaScript, HTML5, CSS, XML, JSON, jQuery, Microformats.
  •  Experience with dynamic web page generation such as PHP, JSP, MySQL and AJAX
  •  Ability to use graphics software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Gimp
  • Proactively offers unique design and UI suggestions
  • Implements successful visual designs that deliver effective, engaging web presentations
  • Responsible for integrating online marketing material including newsletters, banner ads, Flash creatives and landing pages
  • Experience with GWT (Google Web Tools)
  • Experience with user-centric products, cross-browser compatibility, accessibility and SEO optimization
  • Passion for designing highly usable user interfaces
  • Ability to prioritize competing tasks; and the maturity to work and communicate well within a small team

Grants Writer

Basic Functions and Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for identifying and researching prospective funding opportunities with foundations, corporations, and government grant entities and developing grant proposals that reflect the mission of WHRO and secure valuable funding.
  • Responsible for writing narratives, preparing budgets, and tracking and reporting on all grants.
  • Must stay apprised of organizational priorities and challenges, provide input and execute strategies to maintain current funding and generate increased resources, as well as compile and maintain research and reference materials applicable to resource development.
  • This position works to maintain positive relationships with funders and works closely with various departments within WHRO.
Experience:  This position requires experience with proposal/grant writing to help obtain funding for various projects.  Must be highly organized with the ability to implement systems, timelines and follow-up processes, able to effectively work under pressure, use independent judgment and produce a quality work product within tight time constraints.  Previous experience will demonstrate a proven track record in securing new funding opportunities; comprehensive knowledge of research, and the ability to distinguish and identify funding opportunities for special programs.

The candidate will be required to work well in a team environment as well as on their own.  The candidate must possess advanced interpersonal relationship building skills, demonstrated communications skills, and superb attention to detail.  Experience with membership database applications preferred.  Flexible hours including some nights and weekends.

Education:  Four year degree with experience with proposal/grant writing.

WHRO INTERNSHIP PROGRAM- WHRO offers an internship program to juniors and seniors enrolled in a college or similar curriculum to which the internship applies. The purpose is to allow qualified and interested students an opportunity to gain practical experience in a career setting. These experiences can allow students to combine their educational pursuits with day-to-day operations of the communications and broadcasting industry. While some internships can be used for college credit, it is not mandatory.

Individuals may apply in the same way they would apply for a job. An internship application, resume and cover letter are required. The appropriate department head to determine eligibility for the internship will then interview the individuals.

We are currently accepting applications for Summer 2012 semester.

Defenestration Online Radio Stream / Artist Galleries and Profiles

WHRO is offering internship positions with the award winning service Defenestration.  It isn't a radio program, or a TV program, or even a podcast.  It's a compilation of videos, audio recordings, paintings, poetry, sculpture, weaving - any creative endeavor that can be shared with visitors to our website will find a place on defenestration.  In short, defenestration is an opportunity to share an artist's creativity with whro.org's many visitors – and a chance for the public to see and hear the different artistic perspectives of members of the community.  It's a continuous 24/7 variety show…

Applicants should have a keen interest in local music and arts.

Our internships are unpaid; however, students can earn college credits based on approval of the college or university.

Goals

Local Music and Art Journalism Internship

Simply put research and write about local music and art. 
Develop your own portfolio of published work while contributing to Defenestration. This is for individuals who wish to gain experience in the world of music journalism, and have their work published.
Candidates will have the opportunity to contribute by publishing their own original articles on the website contingent upon editorial review of all submissions and approval for publishing. In addition, if you choose to participate in our credited internship program, candidates will perform various functions such as research, fact checking, and basic editing duties.

Pre-requisites:

  • Must love to write
  • Must love music and art
  • Must have style
  • Must be able to keep your finger on the pulse of local music, artists, musical events, festivals, new releases, news, etc.
  • Must be able to meet deadlines and submit on a predetermined schedule that you
  • are comfortable with
  • Reasonable computer skills

Research/Marketing
To research and gather information on Hampton Roads local artist to include, musicians, bands, painters, sculptors, comedians, photographers, poets, etc.
Populate a central database with names, contact info, biographies, photos, documents, digital copies of art, etc.

Contact the artists and ask for input to the Defenestration service and provide assistance as needed to include collecting material and posting it
Interview local artists via video and audio for inclusion on the media player and artist galleries.

Producer
Create shows using audio and video collected for inclusion in the online stream and artist galleries.
Interview local artists via video and audio for inclusion on the media player and artist galleries.
