1. I Can't Get Online. What's The First Thing I Should Do?

Restart! Sometimes all it takes to get your connection back up and running is to restart your machine. Also, check to make sure your "Caps Lock" is not on :-)

2. I STILL Can't Get On, Should I Re-Install The Software?

We do not recommend that you re-install the software, this could possibly cause you more problems than you started with. Call the tech support hotline at 889.9424 option 1, if you get to the point where you want to re-install the software.

3. Everything Looks Right, But My Computer Is Acting Funny. Is There Something I Can Do?

Zap the P Ram! This will rarely be needed, but it might be useful when everything looks to be in pristine order, yet the connection doesn't work. Restart the computer and just as it is beginning to boot, hold down the following keys: OPTION, APPLE KEY, P, R. Wait for the Macintosh to do three exclamation sounds. Release the keys and let the computer boot up.

4. I Have a Geoport Modem, Is There Any Hope For Me At All?

This is a special modem. They need special software to be unlocked. To use them, you need to set the init string to AT&F1 and the port speed cannot be any higher than 19200. Also, ISPs must support this modem. Most customers will need to get a new modem.

5. The Connect Button and/or Open Ppp Connection Is Grayed Out

This usually happens when there are conflicting PPP files in the system or the TCP/IP settings are not set to use FreePPP. Check the TCP/IP settings first. Clear the PRAM to flush any settings (see question 7 below). If it's set properly, go to the apple at the top left of the screen, click on control panel and then to the extension manager. Make sure that everything related to Open Transport, TCP/IP and PPP is checked and then proceed to do the system cleanup and reinstallation.

6. I Think I Really Do Need To Re-Install, Where Do I Start?


  • Throw away Internet Explorer 5 folder from the Hard Drive
  • Throw away outlook express preference
  • Throw away WHRO preferences from Internet Connection Wizard configurations
  • Reinstall the software
7. To Remove The Usefulware Version of WHRO Internet

The first step before a system cleanup and reinstallation of the UsefulWare software is to determine which version of the MacOS/System Software the user has. Click on the apple icon located on the upper-left of the screen. Click on "About this Macintosh" sometimes labeled "About this Computer". This will bring up a screen with the System Software version.

If the System Software is anywhere from 7.1.1 to 7.5.2, then search for the following strings in the file name by going to "file" and then "find":

  1. PPP
  2. TCP
  3. TPT
  4. Transport
If the System Software is anything from 7.5.3 to 8.5, then only search for the string "PPP." Once you have found all those files, make sure you bring them to the trash and that you empty it. Finally, go to the hard drive, and look for the folders pertaining to the UsefulWare software, called "WHRO Applications" and "WHRO Backup". In the case where the provider is using an online signup package, you will also find two folders named "Reconfig" and "Reconfig Backup". Bring these to the trash, empty it and restart the Macintosh by going to "Special" and then "restart."

To install the new version of on the same computer that has an older version of already installed, please follow these instructions:

2. Empty Trash and Restart

Follow the steps outlined in the other instructions included in your original installation package.
