From its inception, the Fairfax Network’s Meet the Author series has served to promote literacy, and an interest in reading and writing, by giving students direct access to authors who share their personal stories, offer their writing tips, and encourage students to “keep reading, keep writing, keep dreaming.”
During the half-hour interactive program, authors describe their approach to the writing process, talk about character development, and sometimes share a sneak peek at their books not yet published. During live programs, students call in with questions, inspiring lively and impromptu responses from the authors.
The connection established between authors and students brings the process of reading and writing to life. As a result, students are motivated to read new books, write their own stories, practice the art of illustration, and find and establish their places in a reading and writing world.
Meet The Author: Discover Shakespeare
LIVE! Wednesday, April 25, 2012
1:00 – 1:30 p.m.
Grades 9-12
Four centuries after he wrote them, the plays and poetry of William Shakespeare endure as a source of entertainment and fascination. His friend and literary rival Ben Jonson said, "He was not of an age, but for all time."
The Fairfax Network returns to the Folger Shakespeare Library to examine one of Shakespeare’s greatest plays, Othello. By identifying key passages that underscore issues of fairness — on personal and cultural levels — students will be able to identify how this thematic thread is woven through language and performance. Folger Shakespeare Library Director, Dr. Michael Witmore, will assist viewers in understanding how a play written over 400 years ago still resonates with today's audience. During this live program, students can call in with questions.
The Folger Shakespeare Library, located in Washington, D.C., houses the world’s largest collection of Shakespeare materials and is dedicated to providing educators with outstanding classroom resources.
