Follow the Drinking Gourd

This exciting program includes a new look at familiar constellations as they were interpreted by African slaves in North America. Students will see how stars helped guide slaves northward, and will hear of one family's journey to freedom. Students will also analyze the hidden clues in "Follow the Drinking Gourd," the song that helped guide many slaves on the Underground Railroad. (Grades 2-5)

Let our Foundation guide lead your group on a curriculum-based, inquiry-oriented tour of Jamestown Settlement. Students get involved with significant aspects of the English, Powhatan, and African cultures of the 17th-century colony at Jamestown Settlement. During tours, students handle reproduction objects, think about history through provocative questions, talk with costumed interpreters, and experience living history and gallery exhibits. Mysteries of Flight

Find out how humans learned to fly, from the Wright Brothers' first flight to humans landing on the moon. Discover what flying really is and how things like hot air balloons, blimps, kites, aircraft, and rockets overcome gravity. Learn about the forces and principles of flight, and explore how human-designed aircraft are similar to natural flying machines like birds and bats. Blow up huge bags with just three breaths and learn how to hurl a pencil through a wooden board! (Grades 3-5)

Discover what it takes to fly and what makes a plane go fast or slow. See how weather affects the way planes fly. Explore how human-designed aircraft are similar to natural flying machines like birds and bats, and how these aircrafts help us cut the ties that bind us to earth. (Grades 3-5)

Scream Machines

Students will explore how engineers use math and science to build their favorite roller coasters. Find out what it takes to make scream machines when we investigate the kinds of energy and forces at work in our everyday lives. Explore force, motion and energy through interactive demonstrations of push and pull, potential and kinetic energy, and gravity and friction. Then use your physics know-how to design and construct a roller coaster, complete with bumps, rolls and loop-the-loops. (Grades 3-5)

Learn what it takes to build bridges, trusses, and pyramids. Explore basic building techniques from cave men to the Roman Empire and find out how important mathematics is in construction. (Grades 3-5)
