Begin your program with a safari to explore the artistic interpretation of animals in the Chrysler Museum of Art’s collections. Then the real thing! Educators from the Virginia Zoo will bring animals to the museum and introduce students to some of the same animals they’ve seen expressed in the art during their tour through the museum. Students get involved with significant aspects of the English, Powhatan, and African cultures of the 17th-century colony at Jamestown Settlement. During tours, students handle reproduction objects, think about history through provocative questions, talk with costumed interpreters, and experience living history and gallery exhibits. Through meeting adult mammals, reptiles & birds, children will investigate and understand basic needs and life processes of plants and animals. This popular program uses graphing and visuals to reinforce how living things change as they grow, need certain things to survive and how offspring are similar, but not identical to their parents. *This program is recommended for grades K-2.
