The Garden Ecosystem (Grades 3-4)

Students will investigate and understand how plants and animals in an ecosystem interact with one another and the non-living environment. Students will explore habitats and niches, discover behavioral and structural adaptations and understand the flow of energy through the food web.

Jamestown Settlement Guided Tour

Let our Foundation guide lead your group on a curriculum-based, inquiry-oriented tour of Jamestown Settlement. Students get involved with significant aspects of the English, Powhatan, and African cultures of the 17th-century colony at Jamestown Settlement. During tours, students handle reproduction objects, think about history through provocative questions, talk with costumed interpreters, and experience living history and gallery exhibits. Tours address the History and Social Science SOL's listed. Guides will cover the standards appropriate for your grade-level. Please let us know if specific standards should be addressed.

Corn grinding, hide scraping, and cordage making are some of the activities students may try in the recreated Powhatan Indian village as they explore the culture of the Powhatans. Also available: Living with the Indians Primary Program for preschool, kindergarten and first-grade students. Program available for youth/student and Legacy Learning group participants. Living with the Indians (outreach program)

Students handle and analyze clothing, bone tools, pottery, and other reproduction artifacts of the Powhatan Indian culture. They learn the ways the Powhatans effectively used their environment and the day-to-day jobs in and around a Powhatan village. Classes also receive materials to make their own rope.
