Structures: From Pyramids to Space Stations http://www.vasc.org/Education/preK-2.html 

Take a journey from the Egyptian pyramids of the past to a Mars Base of the future. Learn how physical environment and technology influence buildings and their materials, including the current construction of the International Space Station. Explore basic building techniques from cave men to the pharaohs of Ancient Egypt and then put your engineering skills to work as you build bridges, pyramids, and arches. Travel back in time to the pyramids with the IMAX film Mysteries of Egypt. (Grades Pre-K – 2)

Treasure Hunt Time Capsule http://www.baylink.org/lessons/3fr_macmem1.html 

General Douglas MacArthur's life provides the theme for a "treasure hunt" though the Museum, using symbols for artifacts to follow a map and find those objects in the nine galleries. Students will also learn about the history of Norfolk from 1830 to the present. This is a hands-on experience using a map to find directions inside the museum. Students will view nine rooms in the Museum, find information where appropriate by reading labels, and view many types of American, Japanese and Philippine art. (Grades Pre-K – 3)

Down to Earth

Use all of your senses to get "down to earth" and explore your world! Discover what makes up the Earth, how mountains are formed, and how Earth changes daily. Classify rocks, and see how you can break them with water. Learn how soil is created and then make your own! Sort animals into their habitats. Investigate how the sun affects Earth and what causes day and night. Pair this program with the Disney's IMAX film The Lion King. (Grades Pre-K – 2)

Jamestown Settlement Guided Tour

Let our Foundation guide lead your group on a curriculum-based, inquiry-oriented tour of Jamestown Settlement. Students get involved with significant aspects of the English, Powhatan, and African cultures of the 17th-century colony at Jamestown Settlement. During tours, students handle reproduction objects, think about history through provocative questions, talk with costumed interpreters, and experience living history and gallery exhibits. Tours address the History and Social Science SOL's listed. Guides will cover the standards appropriate for your grade-level. Please let us know if specific standards should be addressed.

Students observe that muddy water blocks sunlight. They consider how soil might get into water and infer the effects on underwater grasses and animals. They dramatize connections among sun, earth, plants, people, and blue crabs in their eelgrass environment; then make a collage illustrating the crabs in an eelgrass environment.

Water Everywhere

This tour encourages students to learn about the water cycle as they investigate Lake Whitehurst and the Garden’s many ponds. Using a hand lens, students will explore a pond and look for plants and creatures that live in and around the water.
