Corn grinding, hide scraping, and cordage making are some of the activities students may try in the recreated Powhatan Indian village as they explore the culture of the Powhatans. Living with the Indians (outreach program) http://www.historyisfun.org/visitus/outreachvirginia.cfm

Students handle and analyze clothing, bone tools, pottery, and other reproduction artifacts of the Powhatan Indian culture. They learn the ways the Powhatans effectively used their environment and the day-to-day jobs in and around a Powhatan village. Classes also receive materials to make their own rope.

Let our Foundation guide lead your group on a curriculum-based, inquiry-oriented tour of Jamestown Settlement. Students get involved with significant aspects of the English, Powhatan, and African cultures of the 17th-century colony at Jamestown Settlement. During tours, students handle reproduction objects, think about history through provocative questions, talk with costumed interpreters, and experience living history and gallery exhibits. Guides will cover the standards appropriate for your grade-level. Please let us know if specific standards should be addressed.

This tour led by a trained educator is designed to help groups get the most out of limited time at either museum by highlighting exhibits in the galleries and living history areas. Through meeting adult mammals, reptiles & birds, children will investigate and understand basic needs and life processes of plants and animals. This popular program uses graphing and visuals to reinforce how living things change as they grow, need certain things to survive and how offspring are similar, but not identical to their parents. *This program is recommended for grades K-2.
