Bernie's Toes

Students hear the story of "Bernie's Toes," then discuss effects of humans on Chesapeake Bay water quality and fisheries. They observe a Secchi disk and locate Bernie's childhood home on a map. Students produce graphs showing changes in various aspects of the Patuxent River area, then discuss relationships or trends. Sand-Shakes & Mud-Pies
Students collect sediment samples from different wet habitats, measure and compare sediment composition from these sites in order to find relationships between sediment size and various environmental factors. Elementary students separate and observe layers; older students make calculations based on their data. (Grades 4-12)
