Seeds of Change

From the tiny celery seed to the 40 pound coco-de-mer, most plants grow from seeds. Seeds are also used in making everything from toothpaste, to film and candy bars. Seeds of Change introduces students to seeds and allows them to examine different seeds, crack open a seed to reveal the tiny embryo and plant a seed to take home. (Grades 1-5)

Staying Alive

Animals in the wild must find creative ways to survive and avoid being eaten. Come learn about intriguing strategies of animal defense such as mimicry, camouflage and behavior "trickery." We will also discover why things such as shells, quills, and venom are so important. Bring your children to interact and explore these and many more secrets of survival in the wild through meeting live animals. *This program is recommended for grades 2-3.

When My Ship Comes In: Hampton Roads and the China Trade

East and West come together in this program focusing on Chinese export porcelain in the Moses Myers House. Students will also participate in a hands-on activity featuring the celebrated "Chinese Shadows," a popular entertainment of the Federal period. A pre-visit classroom outreach program is included. Further enhance your visit to the Myers House with the addition of a living history portrayal of one of Mr. Myers' sailors discussing his travels to China in the early 19th century. (Grade 2)

Treasure Hunt Time Capsule

General Douglas MacArthur's life provides the theme for a "treasure hunt" though the Museum, using symbols for artifacts to follow a map and find those objects in the nine galleries. Students will also learn about the history of Norfolk from 1830 to the present. This is a hands-on experience using a map to find directions inside the museum. Students will view nine rooms in the Museum, find information where appropriate by reading labels, and view many types of American, Japanese and Philippine art. (Grades Pre-K – 3)

Yorktown Victory Center Guided Tour

Let our Foundation guide lead your group on a two-hour curriculum-based, inquiry-oriented tour of Yorktown Victory Center. Students get involved with significant aspects of the impact of the American Revolution on the people of America and the development of the new nation at Yorktown Victory Center. During tours, students handle reproduction objects, think about history through provocative questions, talk with costumed interpreters, and experience living history and gallery exhibits. Guides will cover the standards appropriate for your grade-level. Please let us know if specific standards should be addressed.
