Ancient Worlds, Ancient Lives

Art and artifacts from the ancient civilizations of Egypt, Greece, Rome, China, Japan, India, Africa, and Mesoamerica are introduced to students in this exciting tour. Cover all eight ancient civilizations. (Grades 2 - 12)

Living with the Indians (on-site program at Jamestown Settlement) http://www.historyisfun.org/visitus/handsonJS.cfm

Corn grinding, hide scraping, and cordage making are some of the activities students may try in the recreated Powhatan Indian village as they explore the culture of the Powhatans. Also available: Living with the Indians Primary Program for preschool, kindergarten and first-grade students. Program available for youth/student and Legacy Learning group participants. Students handle and analyze clothing, bone tools, pottery, and other reproduction artifacts of the Powhatan Indian culture. They learn the ways the Powhatans effectively used their environment and the day-to-day jobs in and around a Powhatan village. Classes also receive materials to make their own rope.

When My Ship Comes In: Hampton Roads and the China Trade

East and West come together in this program focusing on Chinese export porcelain in the Moses Myers House. Students will also participate in a hands-on activity featuring the celebrated "Chinese Shadows," a popular entertainment of the Federal period. A pre-visit classroom outreach program is included. Further enhance your visit to the Myers House with the addition of a living history portrayal of one of Mr. Myers' sailors discussing his travels to China in the early 19th century. (Grade 2)
