A History Treasure Hunt/The Time Capsule

General Douglas MacArthur's life provides the theme for a "treasure hunt" though the Museum, using symbols for artifacts to follow a map and find those objects in the nine galleries. Students will also learn about the history of Norfolk from 1830 to the present. This is a hands-on experience using a map to find directions inside the museum. Students will view nine rooms in the Museum, find information where appropriate by reading labels, and view many types of American, Japanese and Philippine art. (Grades Pre-K – 3)

The Alphabet Tour

Begin your program with a safari to explore the artistic interpretation of animals in the Chrysler Museum of Art’s collections. Then the real thing! Educators from the Virginia Zoo will bring animals to the museum and introduce students to some of the same animals they’ve seen expressed in the art during their tour through the museum. The Changing World

Journey through the cycle of nature as we watch the seasons change and learn how this affects the behavior of animals from Virginia and around the world. Through interactive activities and meeting live animals we will delve into how animals are dependant on their habitat for survival and their parallel behaviors such as hibernation, estivation, migration, and even nocturnal and diurnal.

Corn grinding, hide scraping, and cordage making are some of the activities students may try in the recreated Powhatan Indian village as they explore the culture of the Powhatans. Students handle and analyze clothing, bone tools, pottery, and other reproduction artifacts of the Powhatan Indian culture. They learn the ways the Powhatans effectively used their environment and the day-to-day jobs in and around a Powhatan village. Classes also receive materials to make their own rope.
