    GENERAL INFORMATION

    The Virginia Department of Education, as part of the No Child Left Behind Enhancing Education Through Technology Ed Tech Program (NCLB Ed Tech), has awarded the Consortium for Interactive Instruction over $600,000.00 per year for the next five years (we're already in year 2) to support teacher training activities and related services designed to increase effective utilization of educational technology for teaching and learning. Funds from this program will primarily be used to initiate new teacher training services or to expand existing ones.
    These professional development opportunities will be made available to teachers in C.I.I. Member schools in a variety of ways including:

    online via the web using the BlackBoard course management system (a.k.a. on-line courses);

    on-line via live two-way audio and video (a.k.a. "Smart Learning") classes delivered via H.323;

    face-to-face through a series of hands-on workshops and seminars ranging from one day to a full week;

     and through any combination of the aforementioned delivery systems (a.k.a. hybrid courses).

    Each of these is more fully described in the "Types of Courses" section below.  Most of these courses are available at NO CHARGE to teachers in C.I.I. Member schools. In some instances Graduate Credit is also included at no charge.  Complete details can be found in the Course Descriptions found here (html) or here (pdf). All of these courses are open to teachers in Non-C.I.I. Member schools but at a cost.

    All Professional Development Opportunities, regardless of delivery platform, are listed by subject and then by title in an easy-to-use grid on found here (pdf). Courses listed by date are found here  (pdf). Detailed information on specific courses can be found here (html) or here (pdf).

    "Certificates of Achievement" are awarded to anyone who successfully completes any course. (NOTE: A successfully completed course includes the submission of a technology infused lesson plan that will be shared with teachers across the region, and participation in pre and post - course surveys [these only take a few minutes]).  Click here a sample lesson plan.

    In addition, teachers can work toward any or all of the five new "C.I.I. Technology Integration Certificates"-The Interdisciplinary Certificate, The Mathematics Certificate, The Science Certificate, The Social Studies Certificate, and The English Certificate-by completing four qualifying courses within a three year period. Qualifying courses generally include all of the On-line and Hybrid courses and some of the multiweek Face-To-Face and Smart Learning courses. To see if a course qualifies for a C.I.I. Technology Integration Certificate and for which certificate it can be applied, please see the Course Descriptions found here (html) or here (pdf).

    To register for any C.I.I. Professional Development Course: please go to Electronic Registrar Online or use the hard copy and mail (WHRO/CII 5200 Hampton Blvd Norfolk, VA 23509) or fax (757.489.0007) to WHRO, unless othwise noted in the course descriptions found here (html) or here (pdf).

    Smart Learning Courses

    A number of the Face-To-Face Courses will also be made available to others across the region at designated receive sites via the H.323 standard for transmitting video and voice over existing I.P. networks. This means that schools can now participate in live two-way video "events" (e.g. training, executive briefings and even direct instruction) using low-cost video equipment (known as terminals) that plug directly into existing data network connections. For more information on this delivery mode or to inquire about becoming a receive site, please send e-mail to smartlearning@whro.org. Due to the regional NCLB Ed Tech Grant, all of these courses are FREE for teachers in C.I.I. Member schools. All of these courses are open to others, but at a cost.

    SmartLearning

    (CII/SL) Several workshops are being offered throughout the season via H.323 (SmartLearning), two way audio and video via existing I.P. networks. In the following listings, any SmartLearning class will have an OS, Originating Site listed. This means that the instructor will be teaching from that site, and other remote sites will also be participating. Remote sites are being lined up. When you register, please ask for the remote sites, as there may be a site better suited for you. If you are interested in becoming a remote site, please contact annie.gilstrap@whro.org or 757.889.9382. Loaner units are available.
