The Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology Scholars (VASTS) program. (VASTS) is NASA based science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) initiative featuring a distance learning component and a week-long residential Summer Academy (www.vasts.spacegrant.org). There is a 2.5 minute video located on the website that conveys the excitement of VASTS. If you would like a copy, please let me know. (Brenda Neil, bneil@odu.edu)
Over 500 students have participated in VASTS during the past three years and we hope to expand it to include 400 students for the 2010 distance learning portion of the program and, at least, 120 for the Summer Academy. This program gives Virginia students an opportunity to acquire thinking, reasoning, and problem solving skills in mathematics and science, which is critical to Virginia’s and the nation’s future workforce development.
The program is a partnership between the Virginia Space Grant Consortium and NASA Langley Research Center, with the assistance of NASA Johnson Space Center, NASA Headquarters, the Virginia Department of Education, the Commonwealth of Virginia and industry sponsors.
