Ten years ago, people kept up with what was going on in the world by reading a newspaper or watching television. With our 21st century technology, it’s much more commonplace to see people with their eyes glued to iPods® and BlackBerrys®, swiping their fingers around, researching news stories from all over the world.
It’s become the norm to use mobile devices like iPods and iPads for absolutely everything. Hundreds of companies are creating applications for mobile devices, frequently referred to as “apps,” to perform just about any function you can think of. People can look up information, manage their finances, read books and plan their meals, all with the click of a button.
At WHRO, we’re doing our part to take advantage of this cutting edge technology. Through an Enhancing Education Through Technology grant under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, our Education Department is working with Norfolk State University, Old Dominion University’s Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center and Radford University’s GAMeS Lab to produce a number of educational mobile device applications for today’s tech savvy children.
Instead of just reading a chapter out of a textbook, students will be able to become a part of the lesson through simulation and augmented reality games and information gathering applications for iPods and iPads. These “apps” include everything from adventurous world history games to interactive chemistry quizzes, all related to the Virginia Standards of Learning for each subject.
All of our educational mobile device apps will be completed by September 2011, and will be available through WHRO’s VideoClassroom as well as iTunesU®. Our first iPad app is already available for download, and you can check it out if you have access to iTunes on your computer. “European Exploration: The Age of Discovery” explores the new world as a European power in the 15th century. You can hire captains, build ships and outfit voyages, but remember: you’ll be learning World History II SOL’s at the same time!
Technology is ever changing, but under the innovative direction of our owner schools and with the expertise of our mobile device partners, WHRO is able to keep pace with the most advanced learning styles of the 21st century!
Here's a preview of European Exploration.
