Fort Monroe
In 2005 the Department of Defense and the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) ordered Fort Monroe closed by 2011 as a U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command. That same year, a state appointed Federal Area Development Authority (FADA) was created to study, plan, and recommend the best uses for the future of the property. A passionate community discussion ensued.
The Center for Regional Citizenship joined efforts to engage the community and in 2006 held a televised town hall meeting. The next year, the Center premiered Kingdom by the Sea: Fortress Monroe , a half-hour documentary that explores the history, reviews the debate, and considers the future of Fort Monroe.
