Capstone Introduction
(TECH400)
TECH400.17
This self-paced mini-course is designed to introduce
learners to the PBS TeacherLine/ISTE Capstone Certificate Program, which
culminates in a Certificate of Proficiency in the ISTE National Educational
Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS•T). It offers learners an
opportunity to explore the standards and learn about what the Capstone
program entails so that they will have a clear understanding of what to
expect and what is expected of them. Learners will have a chance to
brainstorm ideas for the portfolio exhibits they will create in the
following Capstone courses. The Capstone Introduction is a prerequisite for
enrollment these other Capstone courses.

Using Graphic Organizers For Teaching & Learning
CII.218
Inspiration concept-mapping software is easy to use and learn, yet extremely
powerful and flexible. Students can use Inspiration to create outlines,
brainstorm, explore connections between concepts, group objects and words,
and accomplish other analytical tasks. Teachers of all grade levels and
subject areas can use it as a personal productivity tool (e.g., for lesson
planning) or as a teaching aid.
Inspiration can be used to present new material, reinforce
knowledge, and assess understanding, In other words, Inspiration is useful
wherever students and teachers are generating, organizing, or analyzing
ideas. This is a two part workshop, In the first part, we will explore many
possible uses of Inspiration to, and you will learn to use Inspiration to
create concept maps. In the second part, you will apply Inspiration to your
own curriculum. All participants will leave with an Inspiration document
which fits their teaching style and the needs of their students.

Instructional Strategies
Visual Literacy - Learn To See And Learn To Do!
CII.239
(10 hour workshop)
What do students need to be learning that many are not? The written or
spoken word is the primary form of communication that teachers emphasize in
schools. But we also need to help our students understand the importance of
graphics, music, and cinema, which are just as powerful and in some ways
more deeply intertwined with young people’s culture. We live and work in a
visually sophisticated world, so we must be sophisticated in using all the
forms of communication, not just the written word. George Lucas (Star Wars
creator) in a recent Edutopia magazine article http://www.edutopia.org/magazine/ed1article.php?id=art_1160&issue=sept_04
believes that it’s not about who has access to what technology but who knows
how to create and express themselves in this new language. If students
aren’t taught the language of sound and images, should they be considered
literate? This workshop will introduce teachers to the “grammar” and “rules”
of visual literacy. Learn how to create more effective presentations and
classroom materials using basic design techniques. Every image represents a
particular point of view. A great way to help students evaluate the images
that pervade their world is by having them create and manipulate their own
images. If you would like to improve your (and your students) ability to
communicate visually then this workshop is for you!

Teaching With WebQuests For Grades K-12
CII.229
Although it is a vast reference source and an effective
teaching tool, many educators avoid using the Web in their classrooms
because students have not acquired the skills needed to effectively use the Internet. WebQuests-inquiry-oriented activities in which
some or all of the information that students interact with is found within
Internet resources-are one way that the Web can be meaningfully incorporated

Teaching With WebQuests For Grades K-12
(TECH145)
TECH145.117 (Session 1)
TECH145.122 (Session 2)
Although it is a vast reference source and an effective
teaching tool, many educators avoid using the Web in their classrooms
because students have not acquired the skills needed to effectively use the Internet.
WebQuests—inquiry-oriented activities in which
some or all of the information that students interact with is found within
Internet resources—are one way that the Web can be meaningfully incorporated into the curriculum. In this course, learners
will design a WebQuest to enhance a classroom unit or a particular
curriculum area and engage their students in meaningful research.

Enhancing Your SOLs And Class Projects With Digital Video
CII.235 (6 hour workshop)
Participants will work with digital video that includes
editing video using transitions, still pictures, special effects, inserting
music, and voice overs. The class will also learn the basic video
composition techniques and storyboards. The class will include an
overview of curriculum integration with Science, Social Studies, Language
Arts, Foreign Language, and Visual Arts. Lesson ideas will be discussed and some lesson plans will be provided. Imagine, you can
teach fluency in foreign language by creating a movie of someone speaking
that language and have your students translate. Or, what about making a video advertising a story or a book. Students can
learn the art of persuasive writing by creating video public service
announcements or commercials advertising a product. What about a digital lab report? Have fun with the SOL’s and class projects!

Using Multimedia to Develop Understanding
(TECH305) formerly TECH130
TECH305.19 (Session 1)
TECH305.22
(Session 2)
Students can use multimedia tools to convey their ideas and
demonstrate their understanding of a subject. We must take care, however,
not to confuse the medium with the message. A student may package information in a well-designed form, but the actual
content of the message could very well be inadequate. The challenge for
educators, then, is to use (and encourage students to use) multimedia in such a way as to further a student’s understanding of the
message content. In this course, learners will explore Bloom’s taxonomy—a
system that categorizes the different levels of student learning, from basic and cursory knowledge of a subject to analyzing,
synthesizing, and evaluating the subject—and consider ways to use a
multimedia project to promote higher-level thinking skills. As a final task,
learners will develop such a project for their students.
