Integrating Technology Into The Middle Science Curriculum
(INTSCIE)
INTSCIE.104 (Session 1)
INTSCIE.105 (Session 2)
The teaching of Science over the past decade has evolved with an emphasis on
inquiry skills throughout the curriculum. Through active learning students
are engaged in not only mastering important facts, skills and concepts, but
in internalizing them so that they can be applied in various contexts.
Whereas the Science lab is the center for this kind of hands-on learning,
technology offers new and exciting ways to bring Science alive for students.
More importantly, technology can accommodate students’ different
orientations to learning and understanding. Technology and Science are a
dynamic combination, and through this course you will explore the
strategies, resources and possibilities for middle school teachers to
integrate them across the curriculum.
Prerequisite:
Requires a computer that’s connected to the Internet, an
email account, a current version of a Web browser, a handful of plug-ins.
Requires a basic knowledge of the computer to include word processing,
browsing the Internet, use of electronic mail and specifically how to attach
documents in email, as most of the assignments will be submitted in this
way.

Fostering Collaboration, Inquiry, And Critical Thinking
In Middle School Science (Grades 5-8)
(SCIE130) SCIE130.27
The appropriate use of technology in the classroom encourages students to
ask questions, collaborate with others, and explore and evaluate data—all of
which are important components of inquiry in science education. This course
presents proven critical thinking and cooperative learning strategies for
teaching science that can be enhanced by today’s classroom technology.
Learners will explore both software and Web activities specifically designed
to help students organize and consolidate their thinking, clearly
communicate their ideas, and analyze and evaluate the ideas of others.

Fostering Cooperative Learning, Inquiry, And Critical Thinking In
Elementary Science (Grades 1-4)
(SCIE125) SCIE125.23
This course explores activities that help students organize
and consolidate their thinking; communicate their ideas clearly to others;
analyze and evaluate the ideas of others; and use the language of science to
express ideas precisely. Learners will discover how the National Science
Education Standards relate to teamwork, discussion, and critical thinking.
Learners will explore technologies that can help students develop
critical-thinking and collaboration skills. As a final task, learners will
develop lessons that incorporate collaborative learning, inquiry, and
critical thinking into their science curriculum.

Scientific Inquiry And Field Work: Discovering With
Technology for Grades 6-8
(SCIE120) SCIE120.40
Current technology can help students to improve their problem solving skills
by giving them more opportunities for inquiry. In this course, learners will
explore the many tools available to them and their students, such as Web
sites that have technological equipment available for students to collect
and analyze “real time, real world” data in the field. This course is
designed to give learners a variety of technological strategies to allow
students to record and communicate on-site data collection, analyses, and
investigative results. Learners will examine ways to acquire mobile
technology for their classrooms. As a final task, learners will design a
unit plan for an ecosystem field trip that incorporates current technologies
for gathering, analyzing, and sharing data.
