SCIENCE

Integrating Technology Into The Middle Science Curriculum
(INTSCIE)
INTSCIE.104 (Session 1)
INTSCIE.105 (Session 2)
The teaching of Science over the past decade has evolved with an emphasis on inquiry skills throughout the curriculum. Through active learning students are engaged in not only mastering important facts, skills and concepts, but in internalizing them so that they can be applied in various contexts. Whereas the Science lab is the center for this kind of hands-on learning, technology offers new and exciting ways to bring Science alive for students. More importantly, technology can accommodate students’ different orientations to learning and understanding. Technology and Science are a dynamic combination, and through this course you will explore the strategies, resources and possibilities for middle school teachers to integrate them across the curriculum.
Prerequisite: Requires a computer that’s connected to the Internet, an email account, a current version of a Web browser, a handful of plug-ins. Requires a basic knowledge of the computer to include word processing, browsing the Internet, use of electronic mail and specifically how to attach documents in email, as most of the assignments will be submitted in this way.

Scientific Inquiry And Field Work: Discovering With Technology for Grades 6-8
(SCIE120) SCIE120.40
Current technology can help students to improve their problem solving skills by giving them more opportunities for inquiry. In this course, learners will explore the many tools available to them and their students, such as Web sites that have technological equipment available for students to collect and analyze “real time, real world” data in the field. This course is designed to give learners a variety of technological strategies to allow students to record and communicate on-site data collection, analyses, and investigative results. Learners will examine ways to acquire mobile technology for their classrooms. As a final task, learners will design a unit plan for an ecosystem field trip that incorporates current technologies for gathering, analyzing, and sharing data.
