An Introduction to Underlying Principles and Research for
Effective Literacy Instruction (Grades K-8)
(RDLA150) RDLA150.30
This course focuses on
the fundamental principles that inform research-based literacy and reading
instruction, which are the foundation for the No Child Left Behind policies.
It is designed to give educators an
overview of the relationships among phonemic awareness, phonics, word
recognition, vocabulary, and fluency. Learners study the developmental
stages through which young children gain independence in
the use of phonemic awareness, phonics, and word recognition, as well as the
increasing levels of complex skills required for students to increase their
vocabulary and comprehension skills in grades K–8.
Learners will also explore the literacy needs of English language learners
(ELL), students with learning disabilities, and other struggling readers. As
a final task, learners will create a two week literacy
plan
for their classrooms. Upon completion of this course, learners will have a
strong foundation of research-based literacy instruction methods and
activities to draw from as they transform their teaching
practices
to meet the specific needs of their students, the curricular goals of their
school district, and their state standards.

INST300.19 (Session
1)
INST300.21 (Session
2)
Curriculum mapping is an educational tool aimed at fine-tuning the scope and
sequence of the curriculum that students encounter through their 13 years of
schooling. Developed by mapping expert Dr. Heidi
Hayes Jacobs with assistance from curriculum mapping consultant Dr. Susan
Udelhofen, this course will teach learners how to use mapping in their
school building and at the district level. As a final
project for this course, learners will create their own curriculum map. They
will also be asked to review the projects developed by two of their
colleagues.

Curriculum Mapping II by Heidi Hayes Jacobs
(INST305)
formerly CURR125
INST305.5
The second in a series,
this course shifts the focus from mapping individual classroom data to
implementing mapping in school-wide curriculum planning. Learners study the
role of curriculum mapping teams
before looking at their schools’ goals to determine the best configuration
of such a team. Learners will analyze and refine the data in their
curriculum maps by editing for cohesiveness and developmental
suitability. They will learn and use the seven phases of review and revision
that culminate in a school-wide curriculum map.

Teaching Phonemic Awareness and Phonics (Grades PreK-3)
(RDLA155) RDLA155.23
This course is designed
to give educators research-based concepts and instructional practices for
teaching phonemic awareness and phonics to elementary students to increase
their knowledge of sound/symbol relationships. Learners will study the
stages of literacy development and will practice assessing the performance
of developing readers. They will reflect upon the interconnectedness of oral
language, phonological
awareness, phonemic awareness, phonics, and written language, as well as the
role of each in implementing an integrated and balanced language arts
program. As a final task, learners will
design a plan of instructional activities that develop each area covered in
the course: phonemic and phonological awareness, letter-sound
correspondence, and phonograms.

Teaching Phonics and Spelling for Emergent Readers
(Grades PreK-K)
(RDLA160) RDLA160.13
This course is designed
to give educators research-based instructional activities to teach phonics
and spelling to emergent readers and writers. These activities help students
learn letters, letter-sound correspondences,
sound-letter correspondences, high-frequency words, and word families, which
in turn help them develop oral reading fluency. The topics and methods
include principles which provide the
foundation for the No Child Left Behind policies. Learners will practice
assessing the performance of emergent readers and analyze students’ work
samples to determine their knowledge of letter-sound correspondence.
Learners will design a plan of instructional activities for teaching
letter-sound correspondence, high-frequency words, word recognition, and
spelling based on assessment data. As a final task,
learners will create a case study of an emergent speller.

This course is designed to give educators strategies for teaching reading in
the content areas and information on how to use reading strategies for all
students. Learners will explore learning environments that
promote effective reading and learning, specific skills and knowledge that
students need in order to read content material effectively, and strategies
to help students become more effective readers and
independent learners. Learners will plan learning experiences that encourage
students to access prior knowledge, set a purpose or target for reading,
organize ideas, select appropriate strategies to
make meaningful connections, summarize and take notes, and reflect on what
they have discovered through their reading. Requires a computer that’s
connected to the Internet, an email account,

Teaching Vocabulary: Word Meanings and Word Knowledge
(Grades PreK-2)
(RDLA170) RDLA170.21
This course is designed
to give educators both theoretical and practical information about
vocabulary development for students in grades PreK-2. Learners will study
the role vocabulary knowledge plays in
early literacy, as well as the relationship among the written vocabularies
of reading and writing and the oral vocabularies of listening and speaking.
After analyzing vocabulary-related standards for speaking,
listening,
reading, and writing in the primary grades, learners will evaluate their own
instructional practices with respect to the NCTE/IRA standards and their
state standards. As a final task, learners will assess
and evaluate students’ word knowledge, incorporate effective vocabulary
instructional strategies into their teachings, and reflect on the
effectiveness of their lesson plan implementation.

Teaching Vocabulary: Word Meanings and Word Knowledge
(Grades 3-5)
(RDLA175) RDLA175.16
This course is designed
to give educators both theoretical and practical information about
vocabulary development for students in grades 3-5. Learners will study these
four interrelated concepts: • Students’ word
knowledge is integrally related to both reading comprehension and content
area learning. • Both breadth and depth of word knowledge are essential
when planning instruction. • Incidental exposure, context-based
instruction, and direct instruction are all components of a balanced
approach to vocabulary learning. • Teachers can provide
vocabulary-intensive, word-rich classroom environments to support students’
awareness of words and vocabulary learning. After analyzing
vocabulary-related standards for speaking, listening, reading, and writing
in grades 3-5, learners will evaluate their own instructional practices
with respect to the NCTE/IRA standards and their state standards. As a final
task, learners will assess and evaluate students’ word knowledge,
incorporate effective vocabulary instructional strategies
into their teachings, and reflect on the effectiveness of their lesson plan
implementation.

Teaching Phonics and Spelling for Beginning and
Transitional Readers (Grades 1-3)
(RDLA165) RDLA165.20
This course is designed
to give educators research-based instructional activities and pedagogical
approaches to teach phonics and spelling to beginning and transitional
readers. These activities help
students
learn letters, letter-sound correspondences, letter-sound patterns, and
high-frequency words, which in turn help them develop oral reading fluency.
The topics and methods include principles which provide
the foundation for No Child Left Behind policies. Learners will study
traditional vs. contemporary perspectives on spelling instruction. They will
practice assessing a student’s spelling stage and then
setting appropriate goals for that student. As a final task, learners will
create a case study of a second grade speller.

Motivate Students To Write For Grades K-6
(RDLA125)
RDLA125.201 (Session 1) RDLA125.207 (Session
2)
Connecting with authors motivates students to read and write. In this
course, learners will explore author studies and learn how to use technology
to introduce the idea of "authorship" to their students.
Learners will explore author Web sites and other Internet
sources in order to build a collection of resources that introduce students
to a variety of genres, as well as encourage students to experiment
with
communicating in different forms with others. Requires a computer that’s
connected to the Internet, an email account, a current version of a Web
