Count On It!: Number Sense For Grades K-5
PSEW 608A
This course is designed to help elementary school teachers develop a better understanding of number and number sense; why it is important for students to have number sense; and how to effectively assess what type of number sense students have. Learners will examine lesson plans, Web resources and National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Principles and Standards for School Mathematics dedicated to helping students develop a richer, deeper, understanding for numbers. Through these resources, learners will explore ways they can develop lesson plans and enhance student learning by using manipulatives, both traditional and technological, literature and other forms of technology.
Prerequisite: Requires a basic knowledge of the computer to include word processing, browsing the Internet, use of electronic mail and specifically how to attach documents in email, as most of the assignments will be submitted in this way.

Count On It!: Number Sense for Grades K-5
(MATH220) MATH220.70 (Session 1) MATH220.75 (Session 2)
This course is designed to help elementary school teachers understand number sense, why it is important for elementary students to develop, and how to effectively assess what type of number sense
students possess. Participants will examine lesson plans, Web resources and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards in order to help students develop a deeper understanding of numbers. Through these resources, learners will develop their own lesson plans for enhancing student learning using both traditional and technological manipulatives as well as other forms of technology.

Learners will be challenged to design and implement a lesson, using activities and other pedagogical approaches they have developed in this course. Lastly, learners will reflect on student assessments and receive suggestions from other learners as to how to improve their lesson and their classroom practice.

Enabling Students With Special Needs To Succeed In Math Class For (Grades 4-8)
(MATH165) MATH165.46
This course focuses on how to promote equity in mathematics education for students with disabilities. The "Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 1997" mandates that, whenever possible, students
with disabilities be educated in the same classrooms and with the same curricula as their peers. Learners will discover how to adapt their own curricula and collaborate with special needs teachers to help students succeed in the classroom. Learners will develop new instructional strategies for making mathematics more accessible for students with disabilities. As a final task, learners will develop a plan to incorporate accessibility strategies into their daily teachings.

Patterns And Relations For Grades 6-8
(MATH135) MATH135.33 (Session 1) MATH135.34 (Session 2)
Patterns and relations are the core of algebra. This course, which is closely aligned with the NCTM Algebra Standard, focuses on how to represent, analyze, and generalize a variety of patterns. Learners
will develop a deeper understanding of the mathematics of patterns, and more importantly, acquire and build upon strategies for teaching patterns to middle school students. Learners will read NCTM’s Principles and Standards for School Mathematics, as well as solve sample patterns problems that have appeared on state tests, in order to connect the mathematics explored in this course with the mathematics students are required to learn. This course identifies common mistakes and misconceptions made by middle students in the course of pattern study. Learners will solve rich, mathematical problems and then use that problem-solving experience to reflect on the misconceptions these problems generate among students. Learners will then collaborate with other learners in the online discussion board to develop and evaluate strategies for helping students overcome their misconceptions. As a final task, learners will craft a thoughtful argument addressing the importance of patterns and relations in the mathematical education of middle school students.

Rational Numbers, Fractions, Decimals, and Percents in Grades 5-8
(MATH245) MATH245.25
This course is designed to give middle school educators new strategies for teaching the concepts of rational numbers. Learners will analyze sample problems in order to better understand how their students
approach the study of fractions, decimals, and percents. Learners will learn common misconceptions that students have, such as viewing fractions as portions and not as quantities. Learners will read the NCTM Standards in order to be sure their students will meet expectations at the middle school level and that they will be ready to meet expectations when entering high school. As a final task, learners will create a rational number lesson plan that begins with a student assessment and includes the flexibility to address common weaknesses that may be diagnosed in the assessment.

This course focuses on the concept of function, including theories of function as a process, as a mathematical object, and as a tool for describing and predicting. Learners will first solve mathematical
problems and engage in activities that deepen their understanding of function. They then consider how students approach the concept of function and discuss instructional strategies. Learners will explore and reflect on the misconceptions students have about functions and the difficulties students face in studying functions. The content focuses on generalizing patterns, understanding relations, performing transformations of functions, and analyzing complex functions. As a final assignment, learners construct an effective approach to teaching the concept of function.
