Connecting Family, Community, And Schools
(INST160)
INST160.34
When families, community, and school staff work together to
support student learning, the results are powerful! When implemented
properly, these ties can yield results that mutually support each segment of
the education community — especially the students. Schools must become
actively involved in designing strategies to engage the community and
include families in the education of their children.
This course will cover the principle issues involved in
connecting family, community, and schools, as well as present strategies,
guides, and resources to help teachers bring students’ families and
community into the school structure. Learners will acquire tools to make
their classroom a learning community, and will be encouraged to use every
possible opportunity to take what they have learned and tailor it to their
own situation, their own classroom, and their own teaching environment. As a
final task, learners will develop a partnership and unit plan that fully
integrates parents/family members and community resources.

Creating Units To Support Differing Learning Styles
(INST120) INST120.68
This course is designed to help educators develop a
curriculum that meets the diverse learning needs of their students. First,
learners will assess and identify the learning styles of their students.
Then, they practice planning lessons that address many learning styles
simultaneously by creating a cross-curricular unit topic with
technology-based activities designed to support learning. Learners will
build adaptations and accommodations into their plans, so that they may
easily integrate what they’ve learned into their teachings.

Inquiry-Based Learning in the Classroom
(INST310) INST310.6
Inquiry-based learning emphasizes knowledge through
investigation. In this course, learners will explore the key principles of
inquiry-based learning, the impact of an inquiry-based approach on student
learning, and the effectiveness of inquiry-based lesson plans and Web
projects. Learners will prepare to implement this type of learning, in
conjunction with other techniques, in their classroom developing an inquiry
facilitation plan for a lesson or unit.

Using Assessment and Evaluation
(INST140) INST140.36
This course explores different types of assessment and
evaluation, both of the learner’s instruction and of student learning.
Learners will understand that when assessment and evaluation tools —
including rubrics, journals, formal and informal assessments, and portfolios
— are integrated into the curriculum and implemented properly, they can
greatly enhance both teaching and learning. An understanding of the tools is
made manifest in the final task, where learners create a rubric based on an
existing student assignment.
