E2T2 Stands For Enhancing Education Through Technology
E2T2 stands for Enhancing Education Through Technology, and it represents funding made available under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA). Our grant is in the amount of $2,412,648.63, and will allow WHRO and our educational partners to implement programs that will stimulate the use of educational technology to improve teaching and learning.
To gear up for the creation of the remaining high school core curriculum courses – Astronomy, Chemistry, Financial Literacy, Health and PE 9, Health and PE 10, Mathematical Analysis, Oceanography, Physics, World Geography, World History I, and World History II – the HRVLC held a day of training for the content developers that were selected to create the new online courses. Course creation is a group effort and the content developers spent time working with their project managers, instructional designers, the assessment specialist, and their fellow team members to formulate plans for creation of the courses.

One of the great things about being a teacher is that you can borrow ideas from others and apply them in new ways to benefit your students. I had taken the Online Teaching Methodology Course through CII over the summer and had come out of it inspired to create my own version of an online class for my 5th graders at Star of the Sea School.
As part of the recent ARRA grant funding received, Virginia’s PBS TeacherLine is offering free lifetime accounts to PBS TeacherLine Peer Connection for all Virginia Instructional Technology Resource Teachers (ITRT).

The New Year - 2011 - Marks The 50th Birthday Of WHRO, And We Are Celebrating!
Fifty years ago, no one could have imagined just how far that handshake would reach, but every school system, every student, educator and citizen of Hampton Roads have benefited from it. Today, WHRO is owned by 18 public school systems in Hampton Roads, and has grown into a vibrant public media company that promotes education, culture and citizenship through a wide variety of telecommunications services.

History Of Education Services At WHRO And Education's New Name - THINKPLEX
The late 80’s marked the beginning of what has now become known as the “digital age.” HRETA was tasked with responding to the area school systems’ interests in the educational application of computers and their solution was the Consortium for Interactive Instruction. The C.I.I. was formed with representatives from each HRETA school division to manage regional collaborative developments among school systems, higher education, private and independent schools and major research facilities.
WHRO Education Services - Same Great Services - NEW NAME!
On Saturday, October 2nd, parents brought their children to watch Steve perform live when WHRO brought Mr. Steve Songs to the Virginia Children’s Festival. The Children’s Festival took place at Town Point Park in downtown Norfolk from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and Mr. Steve performed on the main stage at 11:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. While The Festival is designed with those 10 and younger in mind, children of all ages came to help celebrate Hampton Roads’ most beloved family festival.
Mr. Steve entertains families as he incorporates silly lyrics and catchy melodies into songs about gravity, opposites, heroes and kindness.

Chaya, who turns two later this month, immediately recognized Princess Pesto from the PBS children's program, Super Why! at the Children's Festival. Chaya's mother, Suzanne Rimmer, said, "I was thinking "hmmm, what's that character's name?" All of a sudden Chaya pointed and said "P!" That was the first time she identified a letter. The following day, Chaya was watching Super Why! and said "P" right away when she saw Princess Pesto on the TV. “

As we continue to build up the beta version of VideoClassroom/PBS Digital Learning Library (DLL), ingesting more content and acquiring digital rights to more programs, teachers across Hampton Roads have stepped up to help us develop it even further. This past fall, a total of 28 tech savvy teachers from our region worked with ALTA Solutions Group and teachers from six other PBS stations in pilot testing the usability and impact of VideoClassroom/PBS DLL with their students.
The WHRO Classroom Guide is all online this year and features 'PBS Classroom Resources' including descriptions of teacher resources available from the producers of both prime time and children's programming. The descriptions indicate if the site has streaming video and what resources exist including games, lesson plans, places for students to submit work, etc.
The PBS Kids Go! Writing Contest is right around the corner. It is open to students in grades K-5. The contest encourages children to write and illustrate their own stories. The stories are now being accepted and are Due Friday, March 25th, 2011 by 5pm.
The 2011 Virginian-Pilot Spelling Bee

The 2011 Virginian-Pilot Spelling Bee will be broadcast live on WHRO-TV15.1 on Saturday, February 12 at 2:00 p.m. and streamed live at whro.org. Forty-five of the finest area middle school spellers will be in the studio competing for this year’s title.

Policy And Environmental Change Strategies To Combat Childhood Obesity
The WHRO Center for Regional Citizenship was created to serve as an incubator for engaging the region in addressing issues of local interest and to increase our capacity for effective civic engagement.
Studies have shown that if the childhood obesity epidemic in America continues, this generation of young people may be the first in U.S. History to live sicker and die younger than their parents’ generation. The magnitude of the epidemic requires that we all work together to create environments that support more healthy lifestyles.
SUPER WHY and WordWorld are interactive preschool educational series that encourage children four to six years old to become familiar and have fun with words and reading. SUPER WHY’s four main characters - Super Why, Princess Presto, Alpha Pig, and Wonder Red – visit favorite fictional stories and find out how famous characters handle similar situations. WordWorld encourages preschoolers to see words as their friends. Providing constant opportunity for word play for their audience, WordWorld empowers young watchers to become early readers by making the important connections between letters, sounds, words and meaning. These exemplary shows join others like Sesame Street and Between the Lions, and are effective learning tools for young learners.

Star of the Sea School implemented an optional Netbook Pilot Program for grades seven and eight this school year. Those choosing to participate would also utilize the electronic textbooks. Initially, the program generated cautious interest; but how would we deal with the present economy downside, online safety concerns, maintenance, responsible usage, property theft, and more.
When the Smart Board was first introduced to our school, I was excited to get my hands on one. After eight years of teaching, I was tired of standard lectures, slide show presentations and overhead projectors. Learning to use the Smart Board was fun and exciting and I loved introducing creative lessons into my daily lesson plans.
The Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology Scholars (VASTS) program. (VASTS) is NASA based science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) initiative featuring a distance learning component and a week-long residential Summer Academy (www.vasts.spacegrant.org). QuizStar is a branch of 4teachers.org that allows you to create and manage online quizzes. It is free and simple to use. All you need to do is create a free account, create a class, create a quiz, and assign it to your class. Then, after your students take the assessment, you can generate reports to see the results - including an overall summary, individual student results, and item analysis.
Tired of using that same old teaching Power Point? What about your students? Has that good old Power Point presentation assignment lost a little of its charm? Check out Prezi - a non-linear, zooming presentation tool. There are free and subscription based options - educators can get free accounts with 500 MB of storage space. You can also download finished products to play on an offline flash viewer (which comes packaged in the .zip file when you download your project).

VoiceThread is a website that allows you to create a slide-show of images, videos, and documents and add text and voice comments without having to download and install any software. You can also draw on your images with the “doodle” feature to highlight areas of an image or document on which you want to focus or comment. When you share a VoiceThread, you can allow other users to comment on it, too - sort of like an online group conversation. Oh, and you can moderate the comments.

Audio recordings and videos on the web are nothing new, but having the capability to subscribe to them is. Along with the podcast is an RSS file written in XML.

Starfish Award For Creating Humanities Podcasts
Lynda Davis, the Visions teacher at Toano Middle School, and Robb Ponton, the Instructional Technology Resource teacher at Toano, recently engaged their emerging scholars and gifted eighth grade students with technology the students are most familiar with by creating a podcast that integrated World History with art, music, and technology during a unit on Paleolithic and Neolithic communities. Portaportal is a web based bookmarking utility that lets you store links to your favorite websites online. Now your bookmarks are no longer limited to any one machine.
The Educational Technology Leadership Award recognizes one individual in each region whose outstanding work demonstrates a shared vision with the school division for the effective use of technology to support teaching, learning, and school administration and management. It honors those whose leadership has had a significant impact on instruction. Each region is recognized, and this year, two of the awards given were to C.I.I. School Employees.
The Apple Digital Learning Series is a collection of free events focused on introducing educators to the capabilities of the Mac and Apple’s mobile devices in the classroom. Each seminar focuses on a specific aspect of instruction and highlights some of the features of the Apple blended learning environment. All four of these events will be held at WHRO, 5200 Hampton Boulevard, Norfolk, VA 23508.

2) Share Your Story: The 2011 PBS Teachers Innovation Awards is now officially open for entries. For the 2011 Awards, we want to know how you innovate and how you use PBS resources to support innovation. All entries will require video and should show a demonstration of innovation with students (inside or outside of a classroom) or an innovative project that was the result of an instructional activity you conducted and should clearly demonstrate how a PBS resource was used or modified to enhance the lesson or project.
The Department of Physics and Astronomy at James Madison University is accepting entries for a physics video contest. Individuals or teams of high school students are invited to submit original videos that demonstrate and explain a physics phenomenon. Videos will be judged by a panel of JMU faculty and students and should be accurate, informative, and entertaining.
The second annual piggy bank pageant is an opportunity for Virginia Saves to encourage families to establish a savings plan for their future and to help families reduce debt. The piggy bank pageant is targeted to children in grades K – 6 and is a great opportunity for parents to talk with children about importance of having savings.

Astronomy and Technology: A Collaboration Effort Share The Skies
Share the Skies, the nation’s first statewide initiative that enables students and teachers to study astronomy in real time during the daytime without leaving the classroom.
Deborah Marshall, our region’s STS designee and Granby’s ITRT, attended training sessions in New Mexico at New Mexico Skies and West Virginia at the NRAO (National Radio Astronomy Observatory).
During one of their sessions with their students, the scope took about a minute to slew and settle and another 3 – 5 minutes to capture the image. A collective “Whoa!” went out when the bright image flashed on our smart board! The other groups then clamored for their turns. Up came the Southern Nebula, the Jewel Box cluster, the Sombrero nebula, Gemini, the southern Pleiades, and the Swan. Each new image was greeted with awe and wonder. In the words of Caleb, “I never saw the stars that close before. If I saw stars it was on a piece of paper!”
