WHRO, Hampton Roads’ public broadcaster, announced that it has received the inaugural Education Center Enterprise Innovation Award from the National Educational Telecommunications Association (NETA), a professional association that serves public television licensees and educational entities in all 50 states, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
The award, the first given by NETA, recognizes the evolution of public broadcasting into public media, and the reorganization of public broadcasters’ educational services for measurable impact, efficiency, cost-savings, and stronger market position. The NETA Education Center Enterprise Innovation Award reflects the evolution from legacy services to public media.
From left to right: Bert Schmidt (President and Chief Executive Officer), NETA Representative, Brian Callahan (Chief Educational Services Officer), Angie Callahan (Director of Educational Programming & Outreach)
The grant, one of only five awarded in Virginia, will allow WHRO and its educational partners to implement programs that will stimulate the use of educational technology to improve teaching and learning. WHRO will use the grant to complete and enhance the Hampton Roads Virtual Learning Center, an online high school, as well as to create other educational products.
WHRO, owned by eighteen regional public schools, has leveraged this collaboration and developed a number of successful technology based educational services that involve public and independent schools, post-secondary institutions, the Virginia Department of Education, and commercial and not-for-profit partners. Examples include an extensive statewide, online professional development service (Virginia‘s PBS TeacherLine); two statewide digital media distribution systems (VideoClassroom and Discovery Education streaming); regional and statewide virtual schools (Hampton Roads Virtual Learning Center and Virtual Virginia AP School respectively); national award winning educational videos (Net Files, School Talk, and Teaching NOW!), among others.

Partners For Our Stories - Lambert's Point Summer Program
Julie Byers, PHD student at ODU worked with Angie Callhan, Director of Educational Programming and Outreach at WHRO, to expose the Lambert's Point students attending the literacy camp to the interviewing process, camera techniques, and editing techniques. The students spent time with some of the staff at WHRO gaining knowledge so they would be ready when they had to do their own interview with the Norfolk 17 members as well as other community members.
The kids had a great time trying out different techniques for interviewing each other. Julie Byers, Literacy Leadership PHD Student, Old Dominion University, offers a few tips of her own.

Since 1957, when WHRO first started airing “television teachers,” WHRO’s mission has been to be the premier provider of non-commercial, technology-based educational products and services for Virginia educators and students. VideoClassroom, one of WHRO’s latest educational tools, is an excellent example of how we stay on the cutting edge.
With a mixture of internet tips, informative interviews and featured events, it’s easy to see why School Talk is turning fifteen this year. Not only teachers, but students, parents and regular viewers benefit from the knowledge shared through the program, and through all of the quality educational programming WHRO provides.
School Talk Monthly airs on the first and third Sundays of every month from October to May at 2:00 p.m. Archived episodes can also be accessed via live streaming at www.schooltalk.org. The website also includes previous Schools of the Month and links that are highlighted on the show. It’s a great place to visit to find out more about WHRO’s educational programs, products and services.
SUPER WHY and WordWorld are interactive preschool educational series that encourage children four to six years old to become familiar and have fun with words and reading. SUPER WHY’s four main characters - Super Why, Princess Presto, Alpha Pig, and Wonder Red – visit favorite fictional stories and find out how famous characters handle similar situations. WordWorld encourages preschoolers to see words as their friends. Providing constant opportunity for word play for their audience, WordWorld empowers young watchers to become early readers by making the important connections between letters, sounds, words and meaning. These exemplary shows join others like Sesame Street and Between the Lions, and are effective learning tools for young learners.
LIVE Saturday, February 20th beginning at 2:00 pm WHRO will host 40 of Hampton Roads' finest young spellers as they compete in The 2010 Virginian-Pilot Spelling Bee.
The WHRO Center for Regional Citizenship was created to serve as an incubator for engaging the region in addressing issues of local interest and to increase our capacity for effective civic engagement.
With support from a PBS grant, we’ve developed a brochure to draw attention to our region’s rich African American heritage and the significant role African Americans played in the founding of our democracy.
The brochure highlights local landmarks that trace the African American heritage of Hampton Roads. From their arrival in 1619 as indentured servants, to Nat Turner’s 1831 Rebellion, from fighting in the Civil War and later setting up community schools, African Americans have impacted the history and culture of our region and country. Our brochure includes a timeline and a reader-friendly map that encourages exploration of that rich history and culture.
The print brochure is being distributed throughout schools, historic sites throughout Hampton Roads – and we’re making it available to everyone, in downloadable PDF format, at: www.whro.org/nationalparks or click on the image below.

Pitney Bowes Awards Great Bridge Primary a $3000.00 Grant!!
Great Bridge Primary is pleased to announce for the second year in a row, Pitney Bowes Community Investments Literacy and Education Grants have awarded our school a grant. During the 2007-2008 school year, Pitney Bowes awarded GBP $2500.00 to purchase the software program, Word Maker, for our entire computer lab. This 2008-2009 school year, they continued to help our community by granting us $3000.00 which was used to purchase another SMART Board with hardware, a projector and a SMART Document Camera. This helps us achieve our long term goal of supplying every classroom with a SMART Board and projector. GBP believes with the integration of technology into the classroom curriculum, it provides interaction by the students so they can participate in classroom instruction with a truly hands-on approach and allow for Differentiated Instruction.
April 22, 2010 is the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. The Earth Day Network’s goal is for “all people to have a healthy and sustainable environment” and science teachers are working with media specialists to be part of the “educated” and “energized population” that can make that happen (http://www.earthday.net/about). It’s easy, and in the process, you will be helping to infuse your school with 21st century skills and a healthy respect for the environment.
At Granby High, we started gearing up a little early. It all started with a discussion about how we could promote Earth day with an activity that would really make the students think about their impact on the earth and the school. Through a collaborative effort that started with the Science department, Media Specialists and ITRT, a renewed interest in conservation has taken hold throughout the school.
For many students, searching for a call number and finding a book in the shelves at the library can seem like a daunting task.
In the spring, Melanie Parker received five iPod Touches from HCS as part of an iPod Touch project where she had to describe how she would incorporate podcasting into the curriculum.
The video tour directs students through the library’s book shelves, checkout procedures, special collections, and computer lab.

The 365 Days of Astronomy Podcast is a project that will publish one podcast per day, for all 365 days of 2009. The podcast episodes are written, recorded and produced by people around the world.
You can find Charles Dibbs podcast, Learning About Seasons in a Planetarium, on the 365 Days of Astronomy website. http://365daysofastronomy.org/?s=dibbs
Description: Having taught Astronomy in the planetarium for a decade now I’ve discovered that one topic continues to give students and adults of all ages trouble. That is, what is the cause of earth’s seasonal changes? A lesson that I teach to elementary school children inside the planetarium seems to be effective in dispelling any myths and misconceptions about why the earth has seasons. This show is a portion of that lesson.
Susan Braford created this power point presentation for a classroom activity. The students derived the differentiation rules for the 6 trig functions by using the graphs of sine and cosine, their graphing calculators and what they knew of the reciprocals an ratios. Once they discovered d/dx of sin x was cos x, they then used the quotient rule to discover csc x. She was able to roam about the room with her wireless mouse and monitor their progress. It was the first time she tried this and everything went better than anticipated.

Starfish Award For Creating Humanities Podcasts
Lynda Davis, the Visions teacher at Toano Middle School, and Robb Ponton, the Instructional Technology Resource teacher at Toano, recently engaged their emerging scholars and gifted eighth grade students with technology the students are most familiar with by creating a podcast that integrated World History with art, music, and technology during a unit on Paleolithic and Neolithic communities. Podcasts will be available soon. http://www.wjcc.k12.va.us/

Astronomy and Technology: A Collaboration Effort Share The Skies
Share the Skies, the nation’s first statewide initiative that enables students and teachers to study astronomy in real time during the daytime without leaving the classroom.
Deborah Marshall, our region’s STS designee and Granby’s ITRT, attended training sessions in New Mexico at New Mexico Skies and West Virginia at the NRAO (National Radio Astronomy Observatory).
During one of their sessions with their students, the scope took about a minute to slew and settle and another 3 – 5 minutes to capture the image. A collective “Whoa!” went out when the bright image flashed on our smart board! The other groups then clamored for their turns. Up came the Southern Nebula, the Jewel Box cluster, the Sombrero nebula, Gemini, the southern Pleiades, and the Swan. Each new image was greeted with awe and wonder. In the words of Caleb, “I never saw the stars that close before. If I saw stars it was on a piece of paper!”
