Tech In The Schools
The Power of a Data Point
Whenever assessing formative student data, be on the lookout for very small trends, desired or not, which run contrary to the usual or expected. Several years ago, data from the student information system at Granby High School pointed administrators to a tiny increase in attendance for a small group of students during the first few months of an emerging 9th grade transition program.

Modeling and Simulation as an Instructional Strategy in Math and Science Classrooms
In May, 2008 Virginia Beach City Public Schools approved the Modeling and Simulation (MODSIM) Demonstration School Project at Ocean Lakes High School. The purpose of this project is to use modeling and simulation as an instructional strategy within math and science instruction and to demonstrate ways to integrate math and science instruction through the use of models and simulations. This project was undertaken based on the recommendation of the Hampton Roads Modeling and Simulation Initiative.
Other partners in this project to date include:
• National Institute of Aerospace (NIA) – in order to organize, coordinate, and direct these efforts, Mr. Clemente has been assigned as a VBCPS/NIA-MODSIM Educator in Residence. NIA has also provided several online resources for the project through their partnership with Nortel LearnIt.
• isee Systems – isee Systems has provided professional development materials and expertise to the MODSIM teacher cadre for STELLA,
• Virginia Society for Technology in Education (VSTE) – VSTE has agreed to showcase MODSIM at their annual conference February 22 – 24, 2009 to promote awareness of this project. There will be a “MODSIM room” which will have nine sessions focused on the use of modeling and simulation in the classroom.

Podcasts and Popcorn
Students at Davis Middle School in Hampton, VA completed the school's first podcasting project. Mrs. Stephanie Bean's class created a podcast as the culminating project for their unit on the 1920s. The students used GarageBand to compile all of the images, record their commercials, and complete the podcast. This project took one full week to complete and was such a success they invited parents and school board officials to a Podcasting and Popcorn party to view the projects and celebrate our success.
In groups of three, Mrs. Bean's students created talk shows that featured important figures from the 1920s, including Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Bessie Smith, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Langston Hughes, and several others that are outlined in the Virginia Standards of Learning.

Using Claymation to Teach Cell Division
What is Cell Division? The cells in our body divide? Is it really happening in my body right now? Yuck!! These are several comments that were made in my 7th grade Life Science Classroom when I introduced Cell Division. This is a concept that I have found in the past to be a very difficult concept for students to understand. They can’t see it therefore they don’t grasp it. I had to find a way to bring Cell Division to life and I did it by introducing my students to Claymation.

Students from Davis Middle School, Hampton, were not only learning about Cell Division but they were also learning computer and technology skills that they will be able use in real world situations and in school

VSTE Educational Technology
Leadership Institute

Providing leadership in educational technology can be one of the biggest challenges faced by a school administrator.
Breakout sessions will include foundational pillars for supporting this kind of innovation in your school division. Sessions range from advocacy to policy to professional development. This institute targets timely needs of attendees. It can also serve as a segway into your attendance at VSTE's Annual State Technology Conference.
ETLI Keynote Presentation
Dr. Tim Tyson
How can school leadership maximize student engagement and academic achievement? How can leaders encourage teachers and students to collaborate with peers and professionals around the world? In this presentation Dr. Tim Tyson, former principal of Mabry Middle School, who has been called "The Pied Piper of Educational Technology" by the School Library Journal, will share lessons learned and philosophical frameworks gleaned from that school's exploration of best practices and ways to leverage technology through school-wide blogging and school-wide student/teacher/administrator digital media creation in their efforts to make learning irresistible.
Under Dr. Tyson's leadership, Mabry received Scholastic and Intel Corporation's prestigious Schools of Distinction Award for Technology Innovation. He set up MabryOnline.org, a collection of over 100 blogs which served as the school web presence and features students', teachers' and administrators' digital media creations, serving up over 1.5 million files a month to users all over the world. Educators from around the country and several foreign countries visited Mabry to see firsthand the innovative ways technology is used to maximize student achievements.

Astronomy and Technology: A Collaboration Effort
Share The Skies
Share the Skies, the nation’s first statewide initiative that enables students and teachers to study astronomy in real time during the daytime without leaving the classroom.
Deborah Marshall, our region’s STS designee and Granby’s ITRT, attended training sessions in New Mexico at New Mexico Skies and West Virginia at the NRAO (National Radio Astronomy Observatory).
During one of their sessions with their students, the scope took about a minute to slew and settle and another 3 – 5 minutes to capture the image. A collective “Whoa!” went out when the bright image flashed on our smart board! The other groups then clamored for their turns. Up came the Southern Nebula, the Jewel Box cluster, the Sombrero nebula, Gemini, the southern Pleiades, and the Swan. Each new image was greeted with awe and wonder. In the words of Caleb, “I never saw the stars that close before. If I saw stars it was on a piece of paper!”

Globe @ Night
As an original member of the Share the Skies VDOE State Initiative, Ms. Marshall was designated as state coordinator for the International GLOBE at Night Project. With 2009 being the International Year of Astronomy, and Share the Skies such a great success, the opportunity presented itself for Virginia to be involved in an International Project: GLOBE at Night.
The classic GLOBE at Night program directs students, families, and the general public how to observe and record the number of stars visible in the constellation Orion, as seen from different locations. Observers report their results online by comparing their view of Orion with a set of template images on the program’s Web site, which shows the number of stars in the constellation for a range of visibilities from bright skies to very dark.
