My job at the GCC this year was to be a “monitor,” in the competition area with the students, observing their work, making sure they follow the contest rules, and generally working to keep the chaos to a minimum. At past Great Computer Challenge’s, I had manned the registration tables and decorated for the awards ceremony, but I can now tell you, being a monitor is where all the action happens…

Tech Trek 2011 dates have been set. Tech Trek: The Next Generation is scheduled for July 25 - 29, 2011.
Tech Trek: the Next Generation is for the more advanced user and the week covers online learning, web content creation technologies, and multimedia while focusing on Project Based Learning.
This year, the C.I.I. conducted a total of six special interest forums, covering all of the topics they determined to be the most relevant. These included What’s New With Discovery Education™, Updates in Discovery Education™ streaming for Administrators, Using Mobile Devices in the Classroom, Legislative Update, Assistive Technologies/Special Education, and Web 2.0 Tools.
This spring we have demonstrated a variety of online content delivery methods to several different audiences, including superintendents, school board members and D2L system administrators from the Hampton Roads region. Sample learning activities can be viewed at: http://demo.hrvlc.org/.
All of the courses are aligned to the Virginia Standards of Learning; have been created and reviewed by content experts from across the region to assure the highest quality; and are modular in nature to allow for maximum delivery flexibility. Each school division can further customize and use the courses as they see fit within their divisions.
Offering online AP®, world language, and elective courses to more than 3,000 students across the Commonwealth and nation. Each course contains video segments, audio clips, interactivity, whiteboard and online discussions as well as text.
Designed to bring you the latest and greatest in high quality, on-going, easy-to-access, online, technology integration training, Virginia’s Community of Anytime Knowledge builds on decades of HRETA and VSTE teacher training experience and already features nearly 150 courses from Virginia’s PBS TeacherLine as well as dozens of other locally developed, high need courses and leading edge digital content created just for you.
Virginia’s Community of Anytime Knowledge is online learning at its best. Thousands of Virginia teachers have already taken at least one of our courses over the last year. Why not take one yourself?
“Though the program was a lot of hard work, it was well worth all of it to come away with such a plethora of resources for myself and all of the students and faculty that I help on a daily basis. The local connections that I made with other professionals were an unexpected bonus, as I do not have many other opportunities to collaborate with them on any other stage or level,” said Angelique Moyers, a library media specialist from Suffolk Public Schools and recent Capstone graduate.
We are celebrating our first group of graduates from the PBS Capstone Program who are now ISTE NETS*T Certified. To see a list of our graduates and for more information on the Capstone Program, please visit http://www.virginiateacherline.org.
As part of the recent ARRA grant funding received, Virginia’s PBS TeacherLine is offering free lifetime accounts to PBS TeacherLine Peer Connection for all Virginia Instructional Technology Resource Teachers (ITRT).

Fifty years ago, no one could have imagined just how far that handshake would reach, but every school system, every student, educator and citizen of Hampton Roads have benefited from it. Today, WHRO is owned by 18 public school systems in Hampton Roads, and has grown into a vibrant public media company that promotes education, culture and citizenship through a wide variety of telecommunications services.

WHRO Education Services - Same Great Services - NEW NAME!
Among these services is access to instructional resources such as Discovery Education streaming™ and WHRO’s own VideoClassroom™ – both of which provide access to tens of thousands of high-quality digital media resources for teachers to use with their students. We also offer opportunities for teacher training through our online Virginia’s PBS TeacherLine and Virginia’s Community of Anytime Knowledge courses, as well as face to face through Tech Trek, a weeklong technology “camp,” where teachers can learn the latest educational technology and classroom integration techniques. In addition, teachers and school divisions have the opportunity to be recognized through the Excellence in Technology Awards and the Geddy Awards, which honor educators, integrators, administrators, and entire schools who are leading the way in technology integration.
The Geddy Award is named in honor of Vernon M. “Bud” Geddy, Jr., a former Williamsburg attorney and Mayor, who generously served this region for decades. He served for many years on the WHRO Governing Board of Directors and was a charter member of the WHRO Foundation. His contributions are recognized through the “Geddy Award” so named and established by the WHRO Board of Directors in April, 2004.
This year the “Geddy Award” recognized the regional public Elementary, Middle, and High school perceived as most effectively integrating Technology into the curriculum as well as increasing overall school efficiencies. Relative size, budget, community partnerships and special circumstances will be considered.
Congratulations to this year's winners!!

In January 2011, the PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest kicked off for students in kindergarten through fifth grade and WHRO received more than 400 entries from local children. Their stories could have been fact or fiction, poetry or prose. They were judged on originality, creative expression, storytelling and integration of illustrations. One first place and one honorable mention winner were chosen from each grade level.
The winners and their families were invited to attend a special reception in their honor on the evening of May 20th, where all winners were recorded in the WHRO television studio reading their entries. They also received a savings bond and a DVD copy of themselves reading their story. All of these winners can be viewed presenting their creative stories online at whro.org/writerscontest.

Because students come to us with diverse abilities, learning styles, and learning preferences, teachers must use a variety of instructional strategies to engage students and meet their individual learning needs. This year the Northampton County Public Schools technology department collaborated with kindergarten and first grade teachers and placed ipod touches in their classroom learning centers. Two ipod touches were provided to those teachers who expressed interest in using these devices for instructional purposes. While affording all students the opportunity to use this technology, the teachers targeted students who needed extra support with specific skill mastery.
Career Switcher Finds Niche In 21st Century Classroom
When a former legal counsel service provider for Portsmouth and Norfolk Coast Guard decided to make a career change, she chose to become a classroom teacher with Portsmouth Public Schools. Little did she know, almost everything that she knew about the world of education had changed. The road to transform this career switcher from a 20th Century blackboard, chalk and basal reader style teacher into an effective 21st Century teacher that utilizes a variety of digital technologies on a daily basis was wrought with some interesting challenges, but was well worth the effort! Career switchers bring a wealth of experience to the classroom, and time is well spent to help them develop professionally into 21st Century educators.

VoiceThread is a website that allows you to create a slide-show of images, videos, and documents and add text and voice comments without having to download and install any software. You can also draw on your images with the “doodle” feature to highlight areas of an image or document on which you want to focus or comment. When you share a VoiceThread, you can allow other users to comment on it, too - sort of like an online group conversation. Oh, and you can moderate the comments.

On Friday, February 11th, PBS's weekly national program NEED TO KNOW did a one-hour special devoted to success stories in teaching. The program highlighted three dramatic stories of academic transformation focusing on literacy, science, and physical education. The stories came from Brockton High School (MA), Naperville Central High School (IL), and an effort to "reinvent" science education through the Meyeroff Scholars Program in Baltimore.

Astronomy and Technology: A Collaboration Effort Share The Skies
Share the Skies, the nation’s first statewide initiative that enables students and teachers to study astronomy in real time during the daytime without leaving the classroom.
Deborah Marshall, our region’s STS designee and Granby’s ITRT, attended training sessions in New Mexico at New Mexico Skies and West Virginia at the NRAO (National Radio Astronomy Observatory).
During one of their sessions with their students, the scope took about a minute to slew and settle and another 3 – 5 minutes to capture the image. A collective “Whoa!” went out when the bright image flashed on our smart board! The other groups then clamored for their turns. Up came the Southern Nebula, the Jewel Box cluster, the Sombrero nebula, Gemini, the southern Pleiades, and the Swan. Each new image was greeted with awe and wonder. In the words of Caleb, “I never saw the stars that close before. If I saw stars it was on a piece of paper!”
