It Started As A Dream - The Programming Contest Becomes The Great Computer Challenge

“It started off as a dream,” explained Grace Little, ODU’s Assistant Director of Academic Enterprise Applications and Web Development, regarding the creation of the Great Computer Challenge. This year, WHRO, the Consortium for Interactive Instruction (C.I.I.) and Old Dominion University celebrate the 25th anniversary of the GCC—our joint project that provides the opportunity for students to demonstrate their skills in various computer applications and programming problems.

Lessons From A Computer Competition

25th Annual Great Computer Challenge
on May 1, 2010.

My most memorable trip to the Great Computer challenge was our second trip. However, In order to tell you about my second trip to the Great Computer Challenge, I must begin by telling you about my first in 2002. It was a disappointing experience as my top team had one student who wasn’t happy with the rotation of responsibilities that her team had decided upon. She played with the mouse, complained and wasted time causing them to not produce a quality solution. It was a horrible experience for them…and it was my fault. You see, I decided to put the troublesome student on their team, because I thought she was a better competitor than a fourth student, who did not compete. I knew that she could often behave selfishly, but I put her on the team regardless. They lost miserably. No one faulted me or even considered that I was the one to blame. The two who suffered returned the following year despite what had happened, along with that little girl who did not compete in 2002. They worked hard, spending time learning and practicing, and vowed to win at least an honorable mention. They set the goal, not me.

Geddy Award 2010 Winners

The Geddy Award is named in honor of Vernon M. “Bud” Geddy, Jr., a former Williamsburg attorney and Mayor, who generously served this region for decades. He served for many years on the WHRO Governing Board of Directors and was a charter member of the WHRO Foundation. His contributions are recognized through the “Geddy Award” so named and established by the WHRO Board of Directors in April, 2004.

This year the “Geddy Award” recognized the regional public Elementary, Middle, and High school perceived as most effectively integrating Technology into the curriculum as well as increasing overall school efficiencies. Relative size, budget, community partnerships and special circumstances will be considered.

PBS Kids Go! Writers Contest 2010 Winners

Reading Rainbow
In January 2010, the PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest kicked off for students in kindergarten through fifth grade and WHRO received more than 400 entries from local children. Their stories could have been fact or fiction, poetry or prose. They were judged on originality, creative expression, storytelling and integration of illustrations. One first place and one honorable mention winner were chosen from each grade level.

Reading Rainbow

The winners and their families were invited to attend a special reception in their honor on the evening of May 14th, where all winners were recorded in the WHRO television studio reading their entries. They also received a savings bond and a DVD copy of themselves reading their story. All of these winners can be viewed presenting their creative stories online at whro.org/writerscontest.

HEALTHY HABITS FOR HAMPTON ROADS:
ADDING MOVEMENT TO CORE SUBJECT LESSON PLANS

The WHRO Center for Regional Citizenship was created to serve as an incubator for engaging the region in addressing issues of local interest and to increase our capacity for effective civic engagement.

Healthy Habits for Hampton Roads is an initiative of the WHRO Center for Regional Citizenship which focuses on healthier lifestyles for Hampton Roads' citizens, particularly for children. The issue of childhood overweight and obesity is an important part of our work, but the overall initiative goals are to increase awareness of this important community issue and empower citizens to work toward solutions individually and collectively.

Healthy Habits

This year, through a generous grant from the OBICI Healthcare Foundation, the Center was able to bring action-based lesson plans to elementary schools in Western Tidewater. The SOL based lesson plans were developed by the Williamsburg/James City County School Health Initiative Program (SHIP) to add to students’ opportunities for kinesthetic learning. SHIP shared their lesson plans and provided in-service training for the Western Tidewater schools. They have also made the plans available online (http://www.whro.org/cfc/K-5_lessonplans.asp).

Newport News Principal Named Outstanding Young Educator, Wins $10,000

San Antonio, TX (03/09/10)—Brian Nichols, principal of Hidenwood Elementary School in Newport News, Va., is a winner of ASCD’s 2010 Outstanding Young Educator Award (OYEA). ASCD honored Nichols on March 6, 2010, at its Annual Conference and Exhibit Show in San Antonio, Tex.

“Brian Nichols is an innovative leader who has embraced technology as a way to improve instruction and effectively communicate with his school’s various stakeholders,” said ASCD Executive Director Gene R. Carter at the awards ceremony. When Nichols became principal of Hidenwood Elementary, none of the school’s classrooms were equipped with 21st century learning technologies. Now, with support from the school division, 100 percent of the school’s classrooms have tools such as interactive whiteboards, projectors, and document cameras. Hidenwood’s Technology Academy merges project-based learning with technology integration to help students become problem solvers and global citizens. In addition, Nichols maintains a Hidenwood Twitter feed and produces video updates to keep parents and community members engaged and informed.

The Capitol Region Society for Technology in Education is a nonprofit organization servicing teachers in the DC, Maryland, and Virginia area. CRSTE has many resources available ranging from classified ads, online classes and workshops. I had the opportunity to take part in CRSTEs first cyber conference. I have taken online courses through Virginia Tech and PBS TeacherLine that have been in asynchronous mode where I logged onto a message board to receive assignment information, then return later to post my homework. For the first time I participated in an online platform that felt more like an interactive learning environment.

Wallwisher - A Cool, Free Tech Tool

With Wallwisher.com, you can create a “wall,” post a question, and open it up for comments. 

Here are just a few ideas for using Wallwisher in the classroom:

  • Reader response to a novel, short story, poem, or article
  • Vocabulary exercise (you post the term and the students have to correctly use it in a sentence, for example)
  • Discussion of a lab experiment (160 characters or less)
  • Discussion of an event in history (160 characters or less)

VoiceThread

VoiceThread is a website that allows you to create a slide-show of images, videos, and documents and add text and voice comments without having to download and install any software.  You can also draw on your images with the “doodle” feature to highlight areas of an image or document on which you want to focus or comment.  When you share a VoiceThread, you can allow other users to comment on it, too - sort of like an online group conversation. Oh, and you can moderate the comments.

Astronomy and Technology: A Collaboration Effort
Share The Skies

Share The Skies

Share the Skies, the nation’s first statewide initiative that enables students and teachers to study astronomy in real time during the daytime without leaving the classroom.

Deborah Marshall, our region’s STS designee and Granby’s ITRT, attended training sessions in New Mexico at New Mexico Skies and West Virginia at the NRAO (National Radio Astronomy Observatory).

During one of their sessions with their students, the scope took about a minute to slew and settle and another 3 – 5 minutes to capture the image. A collective “Whoa!” went out when the bright image flashed on our smart board! The other groups then clamored for their turns. Up came the Southern Nebula, the Jewel Box cluster, the Sombrero nebula, Gemini, the southern Pleiades, and the Swan. Each new image was greeted with awe and wonder. In the words of Caleb, “I never saw the stars that close before. If I saw stars it was on a piece of paper!”
