Ghent School Learns About Simple Machines & Planets Through Videoconferencing

Can you recognize a simple machine or tell what they do? If you can not, ask the 3rd Graders at Ghent Elementary. On March 4, 2009, Ms. Nancy Sever-Science Teacher and Lisa Jeffries-I.T.R.T of Ghent Elementary brought 67 third graders to WHRO for video conference to NASA Glen Research Center to study more about simple machines and how NASA uses them in their space program.

Jumping is easy to do on Earth, but how far can you jump on Venus or Mars? For Ghent Elementary fifth graders, calculating their jump height and learning about the different planets came easy. On March 27, 2009 WHRO hosted 86 fifth graders from Ghent Elementary as they participated in a NASA video conference entitled “Planet Hopping. Kevin Jones, fifth grade Science Teacher and Lisa Jeffries, Ghent I.T.R.T, assisted their students with questions from NASA Research Center in Pasadena, CA regarding our solar systems, while math teachers Doris Parker and Christine Peck helped students calculate their jump height on each planet.

Geddy Award 2009 Winners

The Geddy Award is named in honor of Vernon M. “Bud” Geddy, Jr., a former Williamsburg attorney and Mayor, who generously served this region for decades. He served for many years on the WHRO Governing Board of Directors and was a charter member of the WHRO Foundation. His contributions are recognized through the “Geddy Award” so named and established by the WHRO Board of Directors in April, 2004.

This year the “Geddy Award” recognized the regional public Elementary, Middle, and High school perceived as most effectively integrating Technology into the curriculum as well as increasing overall school efficiencies. Relative size, budget, community partnerships and special circumstances will be considered.

Reading Rainbow 2009 Winners

Reading Rainbow
WHRO received over 450 entries in this year’s Reading Rainbow contest. To highlight Ken Burns’ upcoming fall series The National Parks: America’s Best Idea a special category for fourth and fifth graders was added this year. Students were invited to write stories about their favorite park experience, create a story about a park experience they hope to have someday, or write a story from their imagination with characters and parks they create.

On May 8 a studio taping and a special reception in their honor was held at WHRO.

Spelling Bee

The 2009 Virginian-Pilot Spelling Bee was broadcast live Saturday, February 21 on WHRO DT 15.1 and is streaming on whro.org. Students representing 36 area schools as local Spelling Bee Champions competed.

Third place finalist Elizabeth Elia of Forest Glen Middle School in Suffolk, second place Walter Francis of Southampton Middle School, and first place Caroline Willett from KEYS Home School Association accept their winning trophies from WHRO President & CEO Bert Schmidt and Vice President & General Manager,

Research Proves Super WHY! Helps Children Learn To Read

SuperWhy

A study conducted by the Florida State University Center for Reading Research shows the tremendous influence Super WHY! has on improving early reading aptitude. In summer 2008, 454 preschoolers in 19 cities across 17 states participated in 33 Super WHY! Reading Camps. WHRO conducted a Super WHY! Reading Camp August 18-22 at Fort Story Army Base Child Development Center in Virginia Beach.

Martha Speaks Reading Buddies

SuperWhy

Sewells Point Elementary School in Norfolk, a Title 1 school serving military children will conduct the Martha Speaks Reading Buddies Program during their 2009 summer school. The primary goal of program is to help students build vocabulary and nurture their love of words and reading. The school will receive 450 books for the students participating.

THE NATIONAL PARKS:
AMERICA’S BEST IDEA

The WHRO Center for Regional Citizenship was created to serve as an incubator for engaging the region in addressing issues of local interest and to increase our capacity for effective civic engagement.

WHRO is one of over sixty PBS stations to receive a community engagement grant to work with nearby national parks and other organizations to reach communities that have not historically visited parks. WHRO will produce a color brochure that creates a map to national and state parks in Hampton Roads and highlights the many jewels of early African American history at the sites. African American history and contributions are documented and preserved in our region’s national and state parks, yet they are often overlooked by the traditional visitor. The brochure will serve as a guide for all Americans to better understand how black history is a vital part of the fabric of American history. The brochure should be available by early September and will be downloadable from the WHRO website.

ABS to Award Sussex County Public Schools with Wireless Technology Makeover

Sussex, VA – Advanced technology solutions provider ABS Technology Architects today announced that Sussex County Public Schools is the recipient of $40,000 in wireless communications products and services as part of the company’s “Unplug-and-Win” contest in conjunction with Cisco Systems. The contest coincides with the recent opening of a new ABS office in Lynchburg, to meet its continued growth across the Commonwealth.

Virtual Pioneers at the Jamestown Settlement

Four Virginia Beach computer resource specialists, Lisa Alconcel, Marie Booz, Al Doss, and Kim Harrison, created a virtual simulation of the Jamestown Settlement and Powhatan Village of 1607 for Virginia educators to use as a resource in preparing rich and engaging lessons for their students.

This recreation is housed in the multi-user virtual environment (MUVE) called Second Life on VSTE Island, maintained by the Virginia Society for Technology in Education (VSTE).

Project Safety VA - Sussex

Interactive tours of the James Fort, English ships and Powhatan village have been designed to follow virtual signposts detailing essential content knowledge with links to educational websites. These historical tours have also been recorded using video making software to be shown in the classroom learning environment with students.

Video Conferencing is an “Out of this World” Experience

Students were put into groups and were asked to design their own mission patches during the program. After choosing their group's mission type, mission goal, scientific objective, and mission name; teams designed their patches. Each team sketched / colored their patch. The teams then shared their patches with the class and the facilitator.

Students from Newtown Elementary in Virginia Beach were able to actually discuss and speak with a NASA team instructor this past quarter. Aimee Clarke, the school’s computer resource specialist (CRS), and Melissa Roland, second grade teacher and Newtown’s current Teacher of the Year, began their quest after participating in prior video conferences. “We discovered the value of communicating with others and sharing experiences and how it motivated and excited the children in ways we had not expected,” said Aimee Clarke. “The experiences we have had really have motivated the students to be aware of their presentation skills and consequently challenged them to ask higher level questions. We have been amazed at how the students have risen to the occasion naturally to reach their highest and best performance.”

Skype Across Virginia

Every year, the fourth graders at Trantwood Elementary School begin learning about the regions of Virginia during the last quarter of the year. Students create maps, research facts from textbooks and from the Internet, and share reports. This year we wanted to bring the rest of Virginia to our fourth grade classrooms in a new and engaging way and immediately thought of using Skype. Skype is a free software application that allows for peer to peer instant messaging, file transferring, voice calls and video conferencing.

Astronomy and Technology: A Collaboration Effort
Share The Skies

Share The Skies

Share the Skies, the nation’s first statewide initiative that enables students and teachers to study astronomy in real time during the daytime without leaving the classroom.

Deborah Marshall, our region’s STS designee and Granby’s ITRT, attended training sessions in New Mexico at New Mexico Skies and West Virginia at the NRAO (National Radio Astronomy Observatory).

During one of their sessions with their students, the scope took about a minute to slew and settle and another 3 – 5 minutes to capture the image. A collective “Whoa!” went out when the bright image flashed on our smart board! The other groups then clamored for their turns. Up came the Southern Nebula, the Jewel Box cluster, the Sombrero nebula, Gemini, the southern Pleiades, and the Swan. Each new image was greeted with awe and wonder. In the words of Caleb, “I never saw the stars that close before. If I saw stars it was on a piece of paper!”
